1659 Classic Red 75cl
Worth a pour★★★
You know that red that just gets along with everyone at the table? This is it. The 1659 Classic Red is soft, juicy and full of ripe plum and dark berry, with tannins so smooth they barely tap you on the shoulder. Pour it for the friend who "doesn't really do red wine" and watch them quietly refill. Perfect for a Friday in with grilled meat, zero fuss, zero homework required.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Stick your nose in and you get ripe plum, blackcurrant and a little waft of violets, with a whisper of spice and pepper behind it. The first sip is round and fruity, more dark cherry and raspberry than anything heavy or chewy. There's a faint sweetness on the finish that makes it dangerously easy to keep going, but it's a dry wine, so it stays fresh rather than jammy. Soft, velvety, medium-bodied. Nothing about it bites.

Where it's from

This comes from Leopard's Leap, a well-loved family winery out in Franschhoek in South Africa's Cape Winelands. The "1659" is a little history nod: that's the year the very first wine was pressed at the Cape, back when Jan van Riebeeck was running the show. The grapes are a Cape classic trio, Merlot for plushness, Cinsaut for juicy fruit and Cabernet Sauvignon for backbone, pulled from vineyards around Wellington, Paarl and Franschhoek. South African sunshine in a glass, basically.
