Amarone Della Valpolicella Red 75cl-27%
Pour this when the night calls for something with weight. It's deep, plush and warming, the kind of red that fills the glass and the room. Think dried black cherry, plum and a whisper of chocolate, all wrapped in 15% of velvety power. This is your bottle for a slow dinner, a fire-pit nyama choma, or just a serious wine moment with someone who gets it.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First whiff is ripe and almost sweet-smelling, even though it's bone dry: cherry tart, raisin, a bit of plum jam, then mocha and cocoa underneath. On the palate it's full and round, coating your mouth with dried dark fruit, spice and a warming kick from the high alcohol. The tannins are there but soft and crunchy, and the finish goes long, leaving chocolate and warm spice hanging around. Rich, not heavy-handed. A proper sip-and-think wine.

Where it's from

This comes from the Valpolicella hills near Verona in Italy's Veneto. Costa Mediana means "middle hill," and the magic is in the method: appassimento. After harvest, the grapes (Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara) are laid out to dry for months until they shrivel into near-raisins, losing up to 40% of their weight. That concentrates everything: sugar, flavour, colour. Then they ferment the dried grapes in winter, slow and steady. The result is Amarone, which roughly means "the great bitter," a dry wine made from raisined grapes. Old-school, patient and worth it.
