Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Tommasi 750ml-38%
This is a big, warm, velvety red for the night that actually matters. Think dark cherry, dried fruit and spice, with a finish that just keeps going long after the glass is down. Pour it slow, eat something rich with it, and let it run the evening. One bottle, good company, no rush. We'll get it to you fast, whatever the hour.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

The aroma pulls you in first: black cherry, dried strawberry, a hint of dark chocolate and warm spice, with a little smoky-balsamic edge underneath. On the palate it's full and plush, properly dry despite all that ripe fruit, with soft grippy tannins and just enough acidity to keep it lively. The texture is the magic part, silky and rounded, and the finish lingers for ages. Powerful, but never heavy-handed.

Where it's from

This comes from Tommasi, a family winery in Pedemonte, right in the Valpolicella Classico hills near Verona in northern Italy. The Tommasis have been at it since 1902, and they're now run by the great-grandchildren of the founder. The clever bit is the appassimento method: the grapes are picked, then laid out to dry for about three months before they're ever pressed, which concentrates everything into that rich, intense flavour. After fermenting, it spends around three years resting in big Slavonian oak casks. Amarone is the wine that put this family on the map, and you can taste why.

What does Tommasi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 750ml taste like?

Full-bodied and velvety, with black cherry, dried fruit, dark chocolate and warm spice. It's dry, with soft tannins and a long, lingering finish. Rich and powerful but smooth.

What is the ABV of Tommasi Amarone?

It's 15%, which is on the higher side for red wine. That extra warmth comes from the dried grapes used to make it, so sip it slowly.

Is Tommasi Amarone sweet or dry?

It's dry. The dried grapes give it loads of ripe, jammy fruit flavour, but there's almost no actual sugar, so it finishes clean and dry.

How do I serve Tommasi Amarone?

Around 16 to 18°C in a big glass. Open it an hour ahead or decant it to let it breathe, and it'll really open up. Serve it neat, no ice.

What food pairs with Tommasi Amarone?

Rich, savoury food loves this wine. Think nyama choma, braised beef or oxtail, roast lamb, and aged hard cheeses. It even handles a bit of dark chocolate.

What makes Amarone different from regular red wine?

It's made by appassimento: the grapes are dried for about three months before pressing, which concentrates the flavour and pushes up the body and alcohol. That's why it's so rich and full.
