This is the rum you pour when you actually want to slow down. Deep amber, soft as anything, with toffee and vanilla rolling into warm caramel and a faint curl of smoke. No burn fighting you, just a long mellow finish that hangs around. Late night, lights low, glass in hand. Say the word and we'll have it at your door.
First sniff is dessert: toffee, vanilla, a bit of dried fruit and toasted oak. Then it lands smooth and rounded on the tongue, caramel and butterscotch up front, a dusting of nutmeg and cocoa underneath, and a gentle smoky char from the barrels right at the back. It's restrained, never sugary, balanced the whole way through. The finish is warm and lingering, the kind that makes you go quiet for a second.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Pure Trinidad. The House of Angostura distills it on their column stills in Port of Spain, then ages it at least 8 years in charred oak casks that once held American bourbon. The name's the cool part: back in 1932 a fire tore through the government rum bond, and among the charred wreckage were barrels casked in 1919 that had aged beautifully. Those salvaged stocks inspired the original blend, and Angostura revived the recipe years later. Same island that gave the world Angostura bitters, by the way.
