Bila Shaka Capitan - Craft Lager
Pour this one when you want a lager that actually tastes of something. Capitan is gold in the glass, smooth on the way down, with a warm toasted-malt thing going on and just enough hop snap to keep it lively. It's a craft lager, so it's clean and sessionable, but there's real depth here. Grab it cold, get the nyama choma going, and you're sorted for the night.
First sniff is bready, toasty malt with a little caramel sweetness curling underneath. Take a sip and that carries through: toasted grain, a soft toffee roundness, then a gentle hop bitterness that tidies everything up before the finish. Nothing harsh, nothing watery. It's balanced the way the brewers like it, where the malt and the hops actually talk to each other instead of shouting. Easy company, but it's got something to say.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Bila Shaka means "without doubt" in Swahili, and these folks earned the name. Before Capitan they were the crew (then called Bateleur) who brewed Kenya's first IPA back in 2017 and basically kicked off the local craft scene. They brew out by the Kedong Valley on the edge of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, run on 100% renewable energy, and chase balance over gimmicks. Capitan, their craft lager, landed in 2023 made with locally sourced ingredients. Proudly Kenyan, properly made.
