Pour this cold and the first sip basically high-fives your tongue. Bright passionfruit, a squeeze of pink grapefruit, that green zingy snap Marlborough is famous for. It's dry, it's lively, and it makes plain Tuesday food taste like you tried. Grab it for the rooftop sundowner, the catch-up that runs long, or the night the grill's already smoking and you need something cold in hand five minutes ago.
Stick your nose in and it jumps out at you: passionfruit, gooseberry, a little cut-grass freshness and a twist of lime zest. First sip is all juicy tropical fruit, then the acidity kicks in clean and mouth-watering, like biting a ripe grapefruit. There's honeydew melon sweetness in the fruit but the wine itself finishes properly dry, crisp and tidy, leaving you reaching straight back for the glass. No oak, no heaviness, just pure fruit and zip.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is the brand that basically invented the category. Back in 1973 the team behind Brancott went against every bit of advice and planted vines in Marlborough, at the top of New Zealand's South Island. Sauvignon Blanc went in around 1975, and by 1979 Marlborough had its first ever Sauvignon Blanc. The world has been obsessed with that punchy, tropical, zesty style ever since. The long sunny days and cool nights down there are exactly why this wine tastes so bright.
