Bruce Jack Shiraz 75cl
★★★★ 4.0 (1 review)Pour this and the glass goes deep ruby, almost inky. One sniff and you get dark berries, a curl of spice and a whisper of oak. It drinks rich and robust, the kind of red that wants a fire, a plate of grilled meat and people you actually like. Big South African Shiraz energy at 14%. Say the word and we'll have it at your door before the coals are ready.
The nose leads with dark fruit, think blackcurrant and blackberry, with sweet spice and a savoury hint of oak underneath. On the palate it's full and generous, ripe plum and black forest fruit rolling into a warm, peppery finish. The tannins (the grippy, drying part that frames a red) are smooth and rounded, so it feels rich rather than rough. There's a faint smoky edge that makes it sing next to anything off the grill.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Bruce Jack, a South African winemaker who put in decades around the world (Australia, New Zealand, the States) and ran the cellars for some of the country's biggest names before launching his own label in 2018. The fruit is grown across the Western Cape, picked early in the cool of the morning to keep it fresh, then fermented on the skins with wild yeast and rested in a mix of tank and barrel. It's his easygoing, fruit-forward style in a bottle, serious winemaking that doesn't take itself too seriously.
