Cape Dream Pinotage 2019 75cl
Pour this when dinner involves something off the grill and you want a red with a bit of swagger. It's deep, dark and savoury, with ripe plum up front and a sneaky mocha-chocolate streak that makes the second glass disappear fast. Big enough to stand up to smoky meat, smooth enough to just sip. South Africa's signature grape, and a properly satisfying one.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Deep ruby in the glass. Stick your nose in and you get ripe dark plum and red berry first, then that signature Pinotage thing kicks in: mocha and dark chocolate with a curl of smoky spice behind it. On the palate it's full and rounded, the fruit carrying through with ripe, soft tannins that grip just enough without drying you out. Dry, generous, and that little coffee-cocoa note lingers on the finish. Nothing shy about it.

Where it's from

Cape Dream comes out of South Africa's Western Cape, with the brand rooted in the Robertson Valley, wine-and-roses country a couple of hours from Cape Town. The grape itself, Pinotage, is South Africa's own invention: a scientist named Abraham Perold crossed Pinot Noir with Cinsault back in 1925, and the country has basically owned it ever since. That moreish mocha-chocolate character is the modern hallmark style, and Cape Dream leans right into it.
