This is the Malbec you open when the night actually matters. Pour it and you get deep violet in the glass, then a rush of black cherry, plum and blackberry wrapped in violets, mocha and a whiff of graphite. It's full-bodied and seriously concentrated, but the tannins are fine and firm rather than chewy, so it glides. The finish goes on and on. Argentina basically planted its flag in the wine world with bottles like this, and one sip tells you why.
Big and plush, but never clumsy. You smell ripe black fruit first, blackberry, plum, dark cherry, then violets lift over the top with a little mocha, cedar and a cool, almost stony graphite edge from those high-altitude vines. On the palate it's full and velvety with real grip: the tannins are firm but polished, the acidity keeps it fresh, and savoury spice and dark chocolate carry through a long, lingering close. It's dry, structured, and built to make food taste better.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Bodega Catena Zapata in Mendoza, the family that proved Argentine Malbec could stand with the world's great reds. The fruit is old-vine Malbec grown high in the Andes foothills, from estate vineyards like Nicasia and Angélica, where some of the vines trace back to pre-phylloxera cuttings, the original European Malbec from before the vine plague wiped much of it out in France. The wine is fermented entirely in new French oak then aged in barrel, and the label tells Malbec's journey from France to its rebirth in Argentina. It's a tribute bottling, and it drinks like one.
