You want a red that just gets on with it, no homework required. This is it. Deep ruby in the glass, plush and round on the tongue, all ripe blackcurrant and plum with a whisper of cedar from the oak. Merlot leads, so the tannins are soft and the welcome is warm. Pour it next to some nyama choma and watch it disappear.
Stick your nose in and you get dark fruit first: blackcurrant, ripe plum, a little black cherry. Underneath there's cedar and a fine cigar-box oakiness, plus a faint peppery lift that keeps it interesting. On the palate it's full and rounded, the fruit carries through, and the tannins are silky rather than grippy so nothing dries your mouth out. It finishes long and smooth with a touch of cocoa. Dry, but the ripe fruit makes it feel generous, never austere.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes out of Château de Brandey, a family estate run by Vignobles Chevillard in the village of Ruch, tucked into the Entre-deux-Mers stretch of Bordeaux. The vines are old, some pushing 45 years, and they sit on clay-limestone soil facing the afternoon sun, which is what gives the wine its ripe, structured backbone. Mostly Merlot with a dash of Cabernet, made the classic Bordeaux way: honest, unflashy, the kind of bottle the French keep for themselves.
