Think dessert in a glass, but boozier and way more grown-up. Cockburn's Fine Ruby is deep, dark and richly sweet, all ripe berries and a warm hug on the finish. Crack it after dinner with a wedge of cheese or a square of dark chocolate, or just pour a small one and let a long Nairobi night get a little cosier. Only 20%, so it's strong but smooth, the kind you sip slow.
It looks the part first: a deep, glowing ruby red. The nose is all ripe dark fruit, blackcurrant and red cherry with a little flick of spice. On the palate it's full-bodied and properly sweet, think plum, raspberry and a whisper of vanilla and cocoa from a few years resting in oak. The finish is smooth and warming, no harsh edges, just that gentle fortified glow that stays with you.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Cockburn's was started in 1815 by two Scottish brothers, Robert and John, who did things their own way from day one. Instead of buying through the stuffy merchant fair in Porto, they went straight upriver into Portugal's Douro Valley and bought the best grapes at the source. That rebel streak stuck. This Fine Ruby is a blend of young wines from those steep Douro vineyards, made from classic Portuguese grapes like Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional, then rested a couple of years in oak to round it off.
