Picture this: smoky nyama choma off the grill, the night still young, and a glass of something plush and dark-fruited that just gets it. That's this bottle. Carménère brings the smooth, ripe-berry comfort, Syrah kicks in a little black-pepper swagger, and together they pour out velvety and generous with zero stuffiness. It's a red that wants to hang out, not show off. Tap order, we run it to your door fast, any hour.
Stick your nose in and you get a rush of dark berries, ripe plum and juicy strawberry, with a little curl of black pepper and cedar behind it. First sip is all blackberry and cherry, round and mouth-filling, then a whisper of dark chocolate slides through before the tannins land soft and well-behaved. It's medium-to-full bodied, fresh enough to keep you coming back, and finishes long with that gentle oaky warmth. Smooth operator, basically.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes out of the Colchagua Valley in Chile, made by Viña Las Niñas. Colchagua is the country's red-wine engine room: Pacific breezes roll in over the coastal hills and meet cool Andean air at night, which keeps the grapes fresh and gives the reds their colour and lift. The fruit is picked at night while it's cool, macerated about a week to pull out all that depth, then aged in barrel for that soft cedar edge. Carménère is basically Chile's signature grape, a Bordeaux refugee that found its true home here, so this is the real local deal.
