This comes out of Jarnac, a little town in the Cognac region of southwest France, where Courvoisier has been blending since 1828. The grapes are distilled twice in copper pot stills, then the spirit rests up to twelve years in French oak. The VSOP pulls eaux-de-vie (that's the clear brandy before it ages) from across the top Cognac crus, Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois, which is where all those layers come from. Fun aside: legend has it Napoleon was a fan, and his silhouette still nods at that story.
