Pour this and you get warm golden amber in the glass and a wave of orchard fruit off the top. Courvoisier VS is the friendly end of cognac. Smooth, fruity, a little floral, none of that harsh young-spirit bite. Crack it over ice after a long day, or build it into a Sidecar when the night's just getting going. It's the bottle that earns its spot whether you sip it slow or shake it up.
First sniff is all ripe orchard: apple, pear, a little peach, with spring-flower softness sitting underneath. Take a sip and the fruit carries through, wrapped in light oak with a whisper of warm spice and a nutty, toffee-ish sweetness creeping in. It finishes smooth and clean, a touch of crème caramel and tea leaf, never heavy. Easy to love, hard to put down.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Made in Jarnac, right in the heart of France's Cognac region. Here's the fun bit: Courvoisier started as a wine and spirits house in a Paris suburb, and legend says Napoleon himself took a liking to it, with English officers later nicknaming it "The Cognac of Napoleon." The house owns no vineyards of its own. Instead it works with hundreds of winemaking families, then blends their eaux-de-vie. VS is mostly Fins Bois with some Petite Champagne, aged a few years to keep it bright and fruit-forward.
