This is the rice that turns a Sunday pot of pilau into the thing everyone fights over the last scoop of. Daawat Traditional is aged long-grain basmati from the Himalayan foothills, so the grains stay long, separate and fluffy instead of clumping into a sticky mush. You'll smell it before you taste it, that warm popcorn-y aroma drifting off the pot. Grab the 1kg pack and you're sorted for biryani, pilau or a simple bowl of steamed rice tonight.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Aged basmati is all about texture and aroma. The grains are long and slender, and because they're naturally matured for up to two years, they cook dry and fluffy with each one staying distinct, not gluey. There's a gentle nutty, almost popcorn fragrance that fills the kitchen, and a soft, delicate flavour that carries spice and ghee beautifully without ever fighting your curry. Rinse it, give it a soak, and it rewards you with a light pile of separate grains every time.

Where it's from

Daawat is one of India's most-loved basmati brands, made by LT Foods, a family rice business that started back in 1965 with a rice agent in Amritsar and grew into a name shipped to more than 80 countries. The clever bit is the ageing: the grains rest in some of the largest silos in India for up to two years before they're packed, which is what gives them that deeper aroma and the firm, fluffy cook. The basmati itself is grown in the foothills of the Himalayas, the only place it gets that genuine long-grain character.

What is the price of Daawat Traditional Basmati Rice 1Kg?

Daawat Traditional Basmati Rice 1Kg is KSh 370 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for delivery in 30 minutes for most areas in Nairobi, or next day countrywide.

What is Daawat Traditional Basmati Rice 1kg?

It's premium aged long-grain basmati rice from India, grown in the Himalayan foothills and matured for a fuller aroma and a fluffy, non-sticky cook. This is the 1kg pack.

What does it taste like?

Light and delicate with a warm, nutty, popcorn-like aroma. The flavour is soft and lets your spices, ghee or curry shine rather than competing with them.

What is the ABV?

None, this is rice, not a drink. It's a food pantry staple with zero alcohol.

How do I cook it?

Rinse until the water runs clear, soak 20 to 30 minutes, then cook around 1 part rice to 1.5 parts water. Cover, simmer low, rest off the heat and fluff with a fork.

What's it best for?

Biryani, pilau and pulao, and plain steamed rice. The long grains stay separate and fluffy, which is exactly what you want under a curry or a nyama choma spread.

What makes it aged basmati?

The grains are naturally matured for up to two years before packing. Ageing deepens the aroma and firms up the grain so it cooks dry and fluffy instead of sticky.

Where is it from?

India. The brand is Daawat, made by LT Foods, with basmati grown in the foothills of the Himalayas.
