Pour it ice-cold and it just goes. Light, dry, citrusy, the kind of white that doesn't ask questions while the music's on and the grill's smoking. And it's 5 litres in a box, so the glass-topping-up problem solves itself. Friends rolling through, a long Friday, nyama choma on the coals. This is your fridge-door regular.
First whiff is bright and citrusy, lemon and a little orange-blossom perfume coming off the top. Then the sip lands soft and fruity, that tropical guava note South African whites do so well, before it dries out clean on the finish. No sugar hanging around, no heaviness. It's pale gold with the faintest green tint in the glass. Easy, fresh, and it stays out of its own way.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Drostdy-Hof comes out of Tulbagh in South Africa's Western Cape, made by Distell, one of the country's biggest wine houses. The name is the cool part: it's borrowed from De Oude Drostdy, the old magistrate's house in Tulbagh that dates back to the early 1800s and is now a national monument. The cellar itself sits at the foot of the Winterhoek Mountains, prime Chenin Blanc country. So the box on your table is named after a 200-year-old building. Nice bit of trivia for the table.
Quick questions

Drostdy Hof Premier Grand Cru 5L is KSh 5,599 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for fast delivery across Nairobi, usually within the hour, or next day countrywide.
- What does Drostdy-Hof Premier Grand Cru 5L taste like?
Light, dry and fresh. You get citrus on the nose and a soft tropical guava fruitiness on the palate, finishing clean and dry with no sweetness. It's an easy crowd-pleaser, not a heavy or oaky white.
- What is the ABV of Drostdy-Hof Premier Grand Cru?
It's 11.5% alcohol, on the lighter, more sessionable side for a white wine.
- How do I serve it?
Well chilled, around 7 to 9°C, in a white wine glass. Or pour it over ice with a slice of lime for a quick spritz. Being a boxed wine, it keeps fresh for weeks after opening, so no rush to finish it.
- What grapes is it made from?
It's a blend of Chenin Blanc, Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc, a classic South African dry white mix.
- What food pairs with it?
Seafood, grilled fish, chicken and salads all work brilliantly. Think tilapia off the grill, prawns, chicken nyama choma, or just sipped on its own.
- Is it sweet or dry?
It's dry. There's ripe fruit flavour, but the finish is clean and crisp with no lingering sugar.
