Pull the cork and you get a wave of dark cherry, sweet violet and a little black-pepper buzz. It drinks soft and juicy, the tannins are gentle, and it never turns into hard work. This is your easy yes for a midweek dinner or a long Friday with the grill going. Cold beers ran out, the meat's nearly done, tell us where to send it.
Nose first: ripe dark cherry and plum, a pretty hit of violet, then a twist of cracked pepper. On the palate it's plush and rounded, more juicy fruit than grip, with a whisper of mocha and spice from its time in oak. The tannins are soft, so nothing dries your mouth out, and it finishes long and clean. Bone dry, but the fruit is so ripe it can read almost sweet. Easy company, quietly clever.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Excelsior Estate in Robertson, a warm river valley a couple of hours east of Cape Town. The De Wet family has farmed this land for five generations, and Robertson is famous for limestone-rich soils, the kind of ground that grows healthy vines and naturally fresh wine. The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented in steel, then about 30% spends roughly eight months in French and American oak before blending back. That oak touch is exactly where the mocha and spice come from.
