Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Stick your nose in and you get dark forest fruit first, blackberry and plum, then a curl of warm spice: white pepper, a hint of clove, a touch of dried herb and leather that makes it smell properly grown-up. The first sip is generous and rounded, red berries and dark jam up front, with a soft brush of vanilla from the oak. Tannins are smooth and supple, not grippy, so it feels plush rather than chewy. The finish lingers, a little perfumed, and leaves you reaching for the next pour.

Where it's from

This comes out of the Western Cape in South Africa, made by African Pride Wines and a winemaker called Mike Graham, a guy with more than forty harvests behind him. The name's the clever bit: he "forages" parcels of grapes from different vineyards, barrels and batches, then blends them so the whole ends up bigger than the parts. The Shiraz gets some time in French and American oak for that gentle vanilla warmth, while the Grenache stays unoaked to keep the fruit bright and lifted. Smart winemaking, easy drinking.
