Four Cousins Collection Pinotage 75cl
You want a red that just gets on with it. This one pours a deep ruby, smells of red cherry and plum, and goes down soft and smooth with no rough edges. Pinotage is South Africa's own grape, and Four Cousins keeps theirs friendly: fruity, easy, a little spicy, the kind of bottle you open on a Tuesday because the food is hot and the company is good. Grab it, we'll have it at your door before the meat's off the grill.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Lead with fruit. You get red cherry and ripe plum on the nose, then a little black pepper spice creeping in behind it. On the palate it's medium-bodied and rounded, dark berry flavour up front with a gentle savoury edge and a hint of oak sitting in the background, never showy. The tannins (that grippy, drying feel on your gums) are soft here, so it slips down smooth and finishes clean rather than heavy. Easy to love, hard to overthink.

Where it's from

This comes from Van Loveren, a family winery in Robertson in South Africa's Western Cape, and Four Cousins is their flagship name (yes, named after four actual cousins who run the place). Pinotage is the fun part: it's a properly South African grape, bred back in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault, so it exists basically nowhere else on earth. The Collection range is their step-up tier, and this Pinotage has picked up gold at the Ultra Value Wine Challenge for punching above its price.
