Pour this and you get a glass of warm, plummy comfort. It's a Merlot that doesn't make you work for it: soft, juicy, round, with ripe black cherry and a sweet hint of vanilla oak. The tannins are gentle, so it goes down easy whether you're deep in a plate of nyama choma or just unwinding on the couch. Perfect midweek red, and we'll have it at your door any hour you fancy.
First sniff and it's all ripe plum and black cherry, with a little herbal-tea earthiness and a touch of liquorice sitting behind it. On the palate it's velvety and mouth-filling, full of dark summer-berry fruit, with just a brush of oak spice giving it a soft, smooth finish. It's dry, but the fruit is so generous it almost reads sweet. Easy company, never heavy-handed.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes out of Franschhoek, the gorgeous valley in South Africa's Cape Winelands first settled by French Huguenots, which is exactly where it gets its name (it means "French Corner"). Franschhoek Cellar itself was started back in 1945 by a group of local grape farmers pooling their fruit, and today it's part of the DGB stable. The Merlot is grown across the Western Cape, made to be open, friendly and ready to drink rather than fussy and cellar-bound.
