Imagine biting into a candied orange that's been warmed by good brandy. That's Grand Marnier. It's plush, sweet and grown-up, the bottle you pour when you want the night to feel a little fancier without any effort. Sip it neat after dinner, splash it over ice, or let it turn a Margarita into the best one you've made all year. A full litre means you won't run dry mid-party, and we'll have it at your door fast, whatever the hour.
First hit is orange. Bright zest and candied peel, the good kind, not the syrupy fake stuff. Underneath that sits the cognac: warm, a little nutty, with vanilla and toffee from the oak. There's a gentle bitter edge from the green-picked oranges that stops it getting cloying, so it stays elegant rather than sticky. Silky in the mouth, slow and warming on the finish. Sweet, yes, but with real depth behind it.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
France, born in 1880. Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle had the bold idea of marrying proper Cognac with the essence of bitter Caribbean oranges, back when blending the two was almost heresy. The oranges are Citrus Bigaradia, picked green in Haiti and sun-dried so the peel oil concentrates. The cognac is roughly 51% of the blend, distilled from Ugni Blanc grapes in copper pot stills and aged in oak. Fun bit: it was nearly called Curaçao Marnier, until hotelier César Ritz tasted it and reckoned a drink that grand deserved a grander name.
