Pour this and the room gets a little more serious, in the best way. Deep, dark and full of itself, all blackcurrant and plum with a curl of vanilla on top. It's the Cab you want when there's a fire going and meat on the grill. Big enough to stand up to char, smooth enough that the glass empties faster than you planned.
Deep ruby in the glass, almost inky. The nose leads with blackcurrant and plum, then a hint of vanilla and cedar from the oak sitting underneath. On the palate it's rich and full, dark berries and cassis up front, a little cocoa and pepper-spice behind. The tannins are firm but friendly, the kind that grip just enough to make you want another sip. Finish is smooth and goes on a while.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it comes from
Guardian Peak is the more easygoing side of a serious wine family. It comes from the Engelbrechts of Rust en Vrede, a Stellenbosch estate dating to 1694 that built its name making world-class red wine. Jean Engelbrecht started Guardian Peak in 1998 with a simple idea: bottle that pedigree at a price you'd actually open on a Tuesday. It's named after the peak watching over Stellenbosch Mountain, looking down across the Helderberg valley where the grapes grow.
