Pour this and the room smells like a citrus grove that went travelling. It's an Irish gin built around gunpowder green tea, so under the bright grapefruit there's this quiet, leafy hum you don't get anywhere else. Crystal clear in the glass, loud on flavour. Build a grapefruit G&T tonight and thank yourself later.
First whiff is all citrus, fresh lemon and a herby, sage-like juniper hiding behind it. Then you sip and the grapefruit takes over, juicy and a little zesty, before green tea slides in across the middle like a smooth jasmine note. The tail goes gently spicy and warm, star anise and cardamom whispering rather than shouting, with a soft honeyed roundness from the meadowsweet. It's aromatic and a touch exotic, but the juniper keeps it honest. Properly gin, just with a passport.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
It comes from The Shed Distillery in Drumshanbo, a small town in County Leitrim, one of the more remote and scenic corners of Ireland. Founder PJ Rigney got it going in 2014, hand-distilling slowly in copper pot stills. The clever bit is the gunpowder green tea, those tightly rolled little pellets that look like shot, vapour-infused along with grapefruit, lemon and makrut lime, while the juniper and warm spices get steeped and pot-distilled. Twelve botanicals, one very distinctive gin.
