Pour this and the first thing you notice is how soft it is. Most gins hit you with a pine-tree wall of juniper. G'Vine glides in instead, rounded and almost grapey, with a whisper of flowers behind the spice. That's because it isn't built from grain like nearly every other gin. It's distilled from grapes. So if you've ever found gin a bit too sharp, this is the one that changes your mind. Build it into a slow Martini or a long, lazy G&T and thank yourself later.
On the nose it's gentle: piney juniper turned right down, a bouquet of vine flower and pot-pourri, then a squeeze of fresh lime zest. Sip it and the texture is the headline. Smooth, soft, slightly grapey from that grape base, with rosewater and lime running through the middle. The spice is the quiet kind: green cardamom, a little liquorice, a curl of black pepper. Right at the end ginger slowly builds and warms, leaving a long, dry, citrus-fresh finish. Floral and grown-up, never perfumey.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
G'Vine comes from Maison Villevert in the heart of France's Cognac country, the brainchild of Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, a guy who grew up around vines and decided gin should taste of them too. The trick is the vine flower, the tiny green bloom that only opens for about a week in mid-June before it turns into a grape. They hand-pick it in that tiny window, steep it in Ugni Blanc grape spirit, then distil the botanicals in small batches and marry them in a little copper pot still nicknamed Lily Fleur. Fussy work. You can taste it.
