You know that wine that just makes a meaty dinner feel like an occasion? This is it. Pour it and you get deep ruby in the glass, then a big hit of blackcurrant and dark cherry with a whiff of cedar and warm spice. It's dry, full-bodied and properly structured, the kind of red that grips a little and then keeps going long after the sip. Grab it for a nyama choma night, a slow Friday, or any time the food deserves a real Cabernet and not an afterthought.
First nose is all ripe blackcurrant and dark cherry, then a layer of cedar and fine oak underneath, with a little spice tickling the edges. On the palate it's full and dark-fruited, the tannins are firm but smooth (that's the grip on your gums that makes red wine feel serious), and there's a long, savoury finish that lingers. Dry, no sweetness, just deep fruit and structure doing the talking.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Journey's End sits in the far southeastern corner of Stellenbosch, South Africa, on the Schaapenberg slopes near False Bay. It's basically the last estate in the appellation and one of the closest vineyards in the region to the sea, so cool ocean breezes drift over the vines and keep the fruit fresh and structured. The English Gabb family fell for the farm and bought it back in 1995, and the cool, granite-soiled, sea-facing site has since drawn comparisons to some of Bordeaux's best. Real terroir, no gimmicks.
