Konyagi comes out of Tanzania Distilleries in Dar es Salaam, and it's been around since 1970. Back then home-brewed spirits were everywhere and wildly unregulated, so the distillery brought local distillers in to make something clean and safe instead. They called it Kinywaji Safi, literally 'pure drink.' It became the Spirit of the Nation, and that figure on the label with arms thrown up stands for strength. It's now a household name across East Africa, from Tanzania into Kenya, Rwanda and beyond.
