You know that red that's serious enough to impress but still goes down easy? This is it. Kumusha Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 pours dark and smells of ripe blackcurrant and dark fruit, then lands smooth, with fine tannins that grip just enough. It's polished but never heavy. Crack it for a nyama choma night, or just because it's a Tuesday and you've earned it. We'll get it to your door fast, whatever the hour.
First whiff is ripe blackcurrant and dark cherry, with a little dark-roast coffee and a fresh green-herb lift in the background that keeps it from getting jammy. On the palate it's medium-bodied and fruit-driven: cassis and red plum out front, a brambly berry edge, and tannins so fine they feel like soft suede rather than grip. It's dry (no sweetness), the acidity keeps it lively, and it finishes long and clean. Smart wine, easy company.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Kumusha is the wine brand of Tinashe Nyamudoka, a Zimbabwe-born sommelier who built his name in South Africa as head somm at Cape Town's famous Test Kitchen before bottling his own. 'Kumusha' is Shona for home, your roots, your origin, which tells you exactly what this is about. He makes it in the Western Cape with winemaker Attie Louw of Opstal Estate, leaning on minimal intervention and natural fermentation. The Cab gets a long soak in old oak casks, then around a year resting in older French oak barrels, which is where those silky tannins come from. A sommelier's wine, made by an actual sommelier.
