Pour this cold and the first sip basically wakes your mouth up. Gooseberry, a squeeze of lemon, green apple and a little burst of passion fruit, all wrapped in a clean, dry finish that leaves you reaching for the next sip. It's the bottle you want when the evening's warm, the company's good, and you fancy something bright instead of heavy. La Motte is one of South Africa's serious old estates, so you're getting real polish here, not just a cheerful gulp.
Stick your nose in and it's all Cape gooseberry, fresh-cut green apple and ripe lemon, with a tropical lift of pineapple and passion fruit behind it. The palate follows through: zippy and mouth-watering, properly dry (only 3g of sugar per litre, so no sweetness), with a lively acidity that keeps everything crisp. There's a touch more weight than you'd expect, thanks to a splash of Semillon and some time resting on the lees, so it feels rounded rather than thin. The finish is long, clean and leaves your mouth watering for the next pour.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
La Motte sits in the Franschhoek Valley, a stunning corner of South Africa's Cape Winelands first farmed back in 1695 by French Huguenot settlers (the name itself is borrowed from France). It's an estate with serious history and, these days, serious standards, owned by the Rupert family. For this 2021, the grapes were actually pulled from three different Cape regions, mostly Stellenbosch with bits of Franschhoek and the cooler Cape South Coast, then cold-fermented gently to lock in all that fresh fruit.
