Malfy Gin Con Arancia 1L
Pour this and your glass smells like someone just zested a blood orange across the room. That's the whole pitch. It's a proper Italian gin with juicy Sicilian orange singing over a clean juniper backbone, sweet but not syrupy, smooth enough to sip and bright enough to wake up a lazy Friday. Crack the litre, drop in tonic and an orange wheel, and you've basically teleported to the Amalfi coast without leaving your balcony.
First hit is all orange blossom and fragrant peel, like walking past a citrus stall, with little lifts of mandarin and grapefruit. Sip it and you get sweet orange and a touch of zesty bitter orange together, then the juniper rolls in late with a gentle peppery, liquorice-spiced warmth so it never tips into squash. It's pale gold, aromatic, and finishes long and clean. Smooth, sunny, properly moreish.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Malfy is made at Torino Distillati in Moncalieri, just outside Turin in northern Italy, by the Vergnano family. For this one they steep Sicilian blood orange peel, press it in a traditional basket press to pull the bright oils without the bitter pith, then distil it gently in a vacuum still at low temperature so the delicate orange aroma survives. Tuscan juniper, coriander, cassia, liquorice, angelica, Amalfi lemon and grapefruit peel round it out. Italian gin done with serious craft, dressed up to feel like a holiday.
