Smell it first: orange peel, warm vanilla, something herby and dried like a kitchen spice rack. The sip is sweet up front, full of red-cherry and cola-ish fruit, then a wave of cinnamon, clove and a whisper of liquorice. Right at the end a gentle bitter edge (that's the wormwood, the thing that makes vermouth vermouth) cuts the sugar so it never feels syrupy. Rich, spiced, a little old-school in the best way.

Where it comes from
This is the one that started it all. Back in 1863, herbalist Luigi Rossi blended it in Pessione, a little village just outside Turin, from a secret recipe of 50-odd herbs and spices (wormwood, chamomile, nutmeg and friends), some of that artemisia hand-picked up in the Italian Alps. White wine base, sweetened with caramelised sugar, which is exactly where that scarlet colour comes from. Nine generations have guarded the recipe since. It's genuinely the original Italian red vermouth.
