Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin 500ml
This is the gin you pour when you actually want to taste your G&T, not just cool down. Forty-seven botanicals are crammed into every sip, so it lands like a forest in a glass: pine-fresh juniper up top, then berries, herbs and a little pepper that keeps unfolding the longer it sits. It's complex without being hard work. One of those bottles you bring out, set on the table, and watch everyone lean in. Tonight's a good night for it.
Stick your nose in and you get juniper first, then a soft wave of lavender, chamomile and lemony verbena, with ginger and lemongrass hiding underneath. The sip is cool and gently dry, almost silky, with mint, fresh citrus, a hint of tart cranberry and lingonberry from the Black Forest, then a peppery, herbal finish that lingers like the end of a good walk in the woods. Loads going on, but it all holds together. Nothing shouts over anything else.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This one's got a proper story. A British RAF officer, Montgomery "Monty" Collins, ended up running a Black Forest guesthouse named after a Berlin Zoo monkey called Max, and he tinkered with a local gin recipe using juniper, spring water and forest botanicals. Decades later a renovation turned up a hand-labelled old bottle marked "Max the Monkey, Schwarzwald Dry Gin" with his notes inside. Ex-Nokia man Alexander Stein revived the idea with distiller Christoph Keller, and Monkey 47 launched in 2010 from Lossburg in Germany's Black Forest. A third of the botanicals are still handpicked locally, and the spirit rests in traditional earthenware vessels before bottling.
Good to know
- What is the price of Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin 500ml?
Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin 500ml is KSh 6,529 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for delivery in 30 minutes for most areas in Nairobi, or next day countrywide.
- What does Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin 500ml taste like?
Juniper-led and seriously layered. Think pine and citrus up front, floral lavender and chamomile in the middle, tart Black Forest berries, and a peppery, herbal finish. Complex but balanced, nothing dominates.
- What is the ABV of Monkey 47?
It's bottled at 47%, which is also a nod to its 47 botanicals. That higher strength is part of why the flavours come through so clearly, even in a G&T.
- Why is it called Monkey 47?
Two reasons. The recipe uses 47 botanicals and sits at 47% ABV, and the name honours Max, a monkey the founder Montgomery Collins sponsored at the Berlin Zoo.
- How do I serve Monkey 47?
Cold, over ice, with a light pour of dry or Mediterranean tonic and a grapefruit twist. Go easy on the tonic so the botanicals shine, or sip it neat over a big ice cube.
- What pairs with Monkey 47?
Its herbal, citrus side loves grilled meats like nyama choma, smoked fish, goat cheese, and salty nibbles like almonds and olives alongside a G&T.
- Where is Monkey 47 made?
In Lossburg, deep in Germany's Black Forest, by Black Forest Distillers. Around a third of the 47 botanicals are picked from the surrounding forest.
