-10%This is the whisky you grab when you don't want to overthink it. Monkey Shoulder is soft, malty and full of vanilla, the kind of sip that's smooth enough to drink neat yet so easygoing it makes a brilliant cocktail. Pour it for friends who say they 'don't really like whisky' and watch them change their minds. Tonight, nyama choma on the table, this in the glass. Sorted.
First whiff is all orchard fruit and warm vanilla, like baked apple with a spoon of caramel. The sip is creamy and malty, a bit of honey, a gentle nudge of cinnamon and oak spice, then a soft fruity fade. Nothing harsh, nothing smoky. Just rounded, mellow and very moreish. It's whisky with the rough edges sanded right off.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from William Grant & Sons in Scotland's Speyside, and it's a clever trick: a marriage of three single malts from neighbouring distilleries, Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie, blended in small batches. The cheeky name nods to the old maltmen who turned barley by hand for hours and ended up with one arm hanging low, a strain they called 'monkey shoulder'. Look at the bottle and you'll spot three little metal monkeys clinging to the shoulder. Nice touch.
