Nutella is made by Ferrero, the Italian family company from Alba in the Piedmont region, hazelnut country. The clever bit is why it's so nutty: after the war, cocoa was scarce and pricey, so the Ferreros leaned on the local hazelnuts to stretch the chocolate. That thrifty fix became a classic.
