Pour this and you get a big, friendly mouthful of dark fruit. Blackcurrant and ripe plum up front, a savoury edge underneath, tannins so smooth they basically wave you through. There's no heavy oak getting in the way, so it tastes like the fruit and nothing fussy. Grab it when there's red meat on the fire or a long evening that doesn't need to end early.
First sniff is dark and generous: blackcurrant, ripe plum, a little woodsmoke and earth. On the palate the Cabernet brings the backbone and that cassis depth while the Merlot rounds it all off, soft and plush. Our cellar crew get chocolate and coffee in there too, a savoury richness that fills the mouth. It's dry, full-bodied and the tannins are gentle, so the finish is rounded rather than grippy. Easy to love, no homework required.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Opstal Estate sits at the head of the Slanghoek Valley in Breedekloof, tucked between the Slanghoek and Badsberg mountains in South Africa's Western Cape. The Sixpence name honours Daniel 'Sixpence' Smiles, the shepherd who herded sheep across this land back in the 1950s and 60s. When the grazing pasture became vineyards, the plots kept his nickname, and the whole Sixpence range is a tip of the hat to him and the farmworker families who built the place. Around 30 of those families still live on the estate today, three generations deep.
