Where it's from
This comes from Elgin, a cool, high apple-country valley in South Africa's Cape, tucked against the Groenlandberg. The Clüver family more or less invented serious wine here. Dr Paul Clüver planted Elgin's first commercial vineyards in 1987 and released a Riesling as the maiden wine in 1990, and they've been Riesling specialists ever since. It's a fourth-generation family farm where over half the estate is kept under formal conservation, and the shale-rich soils are what give this wine its cool, minerally edge.
