Pour this and you get juniper like you've never actually tasted it. Big, resinous, pine-forest fresh, with a peppery bite and a whisper of Kenyan citrus underneath. It's made in Nairobi from the only juniper native to Africa, so it tastes of here in a way no imported gin can fake. Save it for the nights that matter. A perfect martini, good company, no rush to be anywhere.
The nose hits you first: bright, lifted pine and resin, that classic juniper smell turned all the way up, with a little lemon and cardamom curling behind it. Sip it and the juniper holds court, round and mouth-filling, then pink peppercorn and a warm peppery kick roll across the middle. There's a faint nutty, earthy thing happening too, which is the African juniper showing off. It finishes dry and long, peppery and clean, with the juniper still humming after you've swallowed. Elegant, not shy.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is Nairobi gin, and proudly so. Procera is built around Juniperus procera, the only juniper that grows wild in Africa, hand-picked fresh up in the Kijabe highland forest around 2,200 metres and rushed to the still rather than dried like everyone else's berries. The rest of the botanicals read like a tour of the continent: Kenyan pixie orange and Swahili lime, cardamom and mace from Zanzibar, acacia honey, coriander and orris. Each bottle is hand-blown with a hand-carved palm-wood stopper, and the colour dot marks the batch. It's craft in the truest sense, and it's ours.
