Quinta do Carmo Alentejo 75cl
Pour this and you get a glass that's almost black at the core, then a mouthful of ripe dark fruit, a little spice, and tannins so smooth they barely tug. It's full-bodied and dry without being heavy-handed, the kind of red that makes a slab of nyama choma taste like the plan all along. Sunday roast, a long catch-up over the grill, or just a Tuesday that needed rescuing. Say when and we'll have it at your door fast.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Big nose first: ripe plum and dark berries, a curl of vanilla and sweet spice from the oak, maybe a hint of violet if you go looking. On the palate it's full and generous, dark fruit up front, that warming 14.5% sitting behind it, and a long finish carried by fine, polished tannins. The Alicante Bouschet is the secret weapon here, the grape that stains the glass deep ruby and gives the wine its backbone and grip. Dry throughout, so think savoury and structured, not sweet.

Where it's from

This comes out of Alentejo, the wide, sun-baked plains of southern Portugal that turn out some of the country's most generous reds. Quinta do Carmo is a proper old estate near Estremoz, vines, cork oaks and forest sprawling across the land, run for generations by the Bastos family. Here's the cool bit: back in 1992 the Rothschilds of Château Lafite fame bought into the place, so this humble Alentejo red shares a little family tree with one of Bordeaux's most legendary names. It's now part of the Bacalhôa stable, still flying the native-Portuguese flag with that splash of Cabernet.

What does Quinta do Carmo Alentejo 2016 75cl taste like?
