Raymond Huet Bordeaux Pomerol Red 2016 75cl
Exceptional★★★★★
This is the bottle you open when dinner actually matters. Pour it and you get deep ruby in the glass and a wave of ripe plum and dark berry, then something savoury and grown-up underneath. It's soft and velvety, not sharp or grippy, so it goes down easy but still feels serious. Slow-cooked stew, a proper steak, good company, this is its night.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is all ripe plum and dark berry, then it turns savoury on you: cedar, a whisper of truffle, fine oak from a year resting in barrel. The palate is where Pomerol earns its name. Merlot makes it round and plush, soft on the tongue with a weighty, almost silky mouthfeel rather than a wall of grip. It's bone dry but never austere, with just enough fresh acidity to keep it lively, and it finishes long and smooth. Think of it as Bordeaux with the rough edges sanded off.

Where it's from

Pomerol is a tiny patch on the right bank of Bordeaux, barely 800 hectares, and one of the most prestigious corners of France for red wine. The secret is the blue clay in the subsoil, which keeps the Merlot ripening slow and gives these wines their lush, velvety feel. Raymond Huet has been a Bordeaux name since 1873, and this cuvee was shaped with the help of Michel Rolland, the legendary Pomerol-born oenologist whose touch is all over the world's best Merlot.
