First sniff is dessert and woodsmoke: spiced toffee, plum and fig jam, with toasted bread and brioche underneath. Take a sip and it goes silky, butterscotch and caramel up front, then hazelnut and a little dark chocolate, with warm cinnamon and baking-spice running through. There's a deep oak base holding it all together, and the finish is long and rounded with a touch of dried fruit and nut. Sweet, not sugary. Spiced, not spicy. It just keeps unfolding.

Where it's from
It's a Fine Champagne cognac from the Cognac region of France, meaning the grapes come only from the two top crus, Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, in a 65/35 blend. Inside is something like 240 different eaux-de-vie (the distilled spirits) aged between 4 and 20 years, with an average around 12, then married together. Much of that oaky butterscotch character comes from new French oak casks toasted with a long, gentle heat. The name nods to 1738, when King Louis XV granted Rémy Martin a royal warrant to plant new vines, hence Accord Royal.
