You know that bottle you open without overthinking it? This is that. Robertson's Pinotage is all juicy red fruit and a soft, smooth finish, the kind of red that doesn't need an hour to breathe or a fancy occasion. Strawberry, plum, a hint of banana, a whisper of oak. Pour it next to a plate of nyama choma on a Friday night and watch it disappear. Need it now? We've got you, any hour.
Pour it and you get a deep red with a purple-tinged rim. The nose leads with ripe strawberry and red cherry, then a soft banana note that's classic Pinotage, plus juicy plum underneath. On the palate it's plush and round, more fruit than grip, with just a gentle brush of oak (it sees a short spell in barrel, so the wood stays in the background instead of taking over). Dry, smooth, easy to keep sipping. No harsh tannins fighting you.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes out of the Robertson Valley in South Africa's Western Cape, a stretch of wine country famous for its lime-rich soils that grape growers there swear by. The winery itself started back in 1941, when a couple of local farmers turned an old mission church into a cellar and got the neighbours to chip in. It's still run as a co-operative today, one of the country's biggest, with growers sharing in the whole thing. Pinotage, by the way, is South Africa's own grape, a homegrown crossing you won't really find anywhere else.
