-26%You want a red with some muscle but none of the attitude? This is it. Rutini takes Cabernet Sauvignon's firm backbone and folds in Malbec's plush, jammy dark fruit, so you get structure and softness in the same mouthful. It's the bottle you open when there's nyama choma on the grill and the night's just getting going. Velvety, generous, a little serious without ever being stuffy.
First sniff is all dark berries: ripe plum, black cherry, a smear of blackcurrant jam. Sit with it and you'll catch cedar, a whisper of tobacco and warm spice from the oak. On the palate it's rich and rounded, black fruit and a touch of chocolate, with firm but ripe tannins (that grippy, mouth-drying feel that makes a steak taste even better) and just enough acidity to keep it lively. The finish hangs around with a little black-pepper kick. Big wine, but smooth with it.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Rutini comes out of Mendoza, Argentina's high-altitude wine heartland, from a winery that's been at it since 1885. The founder, Felipe Rutini, was an Italian who emigrated from a family of winemakers and chased better grapes up into the foothills. In 1925 his winery became the first to plant vines in the Uco Valley, now one of the most celebrated corners of Argentina. The fruit for this blend leans on that cool, sun-soaked mountain terroir, which is exactly why it tastes so concentrated.
