254 Sand Trap IPA 330ml (Returnable Bottles)
Exceptional★★★★★
You crack one open and it hits you with mango, orange and a whiff of pine, like someone tipped a fruit bowl into a forest. Then it sneaks up: this thing is 7%, but it drinks so clean you'd swear it was lighter. Made small-batch in Nairobi by 254 Brewing, it's the bottle you want when nyama choma is on the grill and the night's just getting going. Cold, bold, and very easy to have two of (mind that ABV though).
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is all juicy hops: mango, a bit of berry, orange peel, with a resinous pine edge underneath. The sip leans tropical and citrusy, propped up by a touch of light caramel malt that keeps it from being all sharpness. Bitterness is real but measured (around 27 IBU, so firm not face-melting), and it lands on a crisp, clean finish that wipes the slate for the next mouthful. Medium body, lively fizz, and that 7% stays cleverly hidden the whole way down.

Where it's from

254 Brewing is named after Kenya's dialling code, and it's the brainchild of Irishman Eoin Flinn, who moved to Kenya in 2011 and eventually swapped homemade kombucha experiments for proper craft beer. He built a brewery on the green slopes of Kikuyu, just northwest of Nairobi, and fought through two years of licensing red tape to open in January 2020, right as the pandemic hit. They make unfiltered, unpasteurised, small-batch beer, and Sand Trap is their hop-forward IPA. Brewed local, drunk local.
