Simonsig Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz 75cl
Pour this when dinner needs a wingman with shoulders. It's a Stellenbosch double act: Cabernet brings the dark, brooding blackberry, Shiraz throws in pepper and a little swagger. Full-bodied, ripe, with a finish that hangs around like the good company at a late nyama choma. Got a craving at 11pm? We'll have it at your door before the playlist runs out.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Stick your nose in and you get ripe blackberry and dark cherry first, then a little twist of white pepper and gentle spice underneath. On the palate it's full and generous, all that black fruit rolling through with a touch of warm spice and a whisper of smoky oak. The tannins are smooth, not grippy, the acidity keeps it lively, and at 14% there's real heat and length on the finish. Powerful but easy to love.

Where it's from

This comes off Simonsig, a Stellenbosch estate run by the Malan family, who've farmed these slopes for generations. They're proper South African wine royalty: back in 1971, Frans Malan made the country's very first bottle-fermented bubbly, Kaapse Vonkel, and helped start the Stellenbosch Wine Route too. So while this is an easygoing red blend, it's made by people who've been quietly shaping South African wine for over fifty years.
