Striped Horse Premium Lager 330ml
Crack one ice-cold and you get a golden lager that actually tastes of something. There's a soft malty sweetness up front, a flick of caramel, then a clean little bite that tidies it all up and leaves you wanting the next sip. It's the bottle you want sweating in your hand next to a smoky grill, or three deep into a slow Friday when nobody's checking the time. Easy company, but it's done its homework.
Pour it and it's pale, sunny gold under a fat white head that hangs around and laces the glass. Nose first: a warm, almost cake-batter maltiness with a faint fruity lift. Then the sip. It opens malty-sweet, rolls into a gentle roasted caramel, and right as you think it's getting cosy a quiet dusting of chocolate and a low, clean bitterness step in to keep it honest. Lively carbonation, nothing heavy, and a finish that's dry enough to make you reach straight back for it.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Striped Horse comes out of Muizenberg, the easy surf town on Cape Town's False Bay, and it's brewed by the Devil's Peak crew. The name is a wink at the zebra, an African original through and through. It's built on Paarl mountain spring water with imported barley malt, a touch of caramel malt and aroma hops, which is exactly where that layered-but-easy malt character comes from. There's even a Striped Horse bar right on the Muizenberg beachfront where it flies the flag.
