You want a G&T that actually tastes like gin? This is the one. Tanqueray hits you with big, clean juniper, the proper pine-forest punch that makes a drink taste sharp and grown-up. It's bottled at a hefty 47.3%, so it doesn't disappear under the tonic the way softer gins do. Pour it tall over ice on a hot Nairobi evening and it just works. And the 1L bottle means you're not running out mid-party.
First sniff is all juniper, bold and piney, with a bright lift of citrus underneath and a whisper of warm spice. On the tongue it's dry and full, that juniper leading the charge, then coriander rolling in for a faintly citrusy, peppery edge. Angelica root gives it a dry, earthy backbone and a touch of liquorice rounds the finish off smooth. Crystal clear, properly punchy, and it ends clean and dry rather than sweet. Only four botanicals, but they're dialled in perfectly.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Charles Tanqueray started distilling this in Bloomsbury, London, back in 1830, and that four-botanical recipe has barely budged since. The original distillery took a beating in the Blitz, but one copper pot still nicknamed Old Tom survived and is still in use today, well over 250 years on. These days every drop is made at Cameronbridge in Fife, Scotland, the biggest grain distillery in Europe. The spirit is English London Dry through and through, that famous green shaker bottle and red wax seal included.
