Big, dark and smooth, with a little floral lift that catches you off guard. This is the bottle you open when the nyama choma is on and you want a red that fills the glass without wrestling you. Ripe plum, dark berries, a twist of black pepper. Pour it, let it breathe, and watch it turn a Friday into an occasion. We'll get it to your door fast, whatever the hour.
First sniff is all ripe dark fruit. Think black plum and blackberry, then a crack of white pepper and a whiff of woodsmoke from the French oak. That tiny splash of Viognier co-fermented in does something clever: it lifts everything with a soft floral, almost perfumed top note, so the wine smells brighter than its deep colour suggests. On the palate it's full and round, generous fruit up front, a hint of leather and cigar box underneath, with firm but friendly tannins and a long finish. Dry, never sweet, properly satisfying.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from The Grape Grinder, working with old dryland bushvine Shiraz across the Swartland and Paarl in South Africa's Western Cape. Those gnarly, unirrigated old vines give small berries packed with flavour, which is why the wine drinks so concentrated. The name tips its hat to the Cape Milkwood, a coastal tree so beloved that a few specimens are listed as national monuments. The winemaking borrows a trick from France's Côte Rôtie: a little Viognier is fermented right alongside the Shiraz, which is what gives that floral lift and silky texture.
