This is properly Kenyan. Tropical Heat is the snack brand of Nairobi's Deepa Industries, which started back in 1973 as a tiny ethnic-snack cottage operation in a Thika kitchen. The present owners took it over in 1986 and grew it into one of the country's biggest potato-snack makers, now exporting to a string of countries from Uganda to the UK. Chevda itself has Indian roots, but Tropical Heat builds theirs on Kenyan potatoes (the ones they'll tell you are the sweetest in the world) and decades of spice-blending know-how.
