Pour this and you get a big, dark-fruited Argentine red that drinks like a hug after a long day. Think ripe plum and black cherry, a dusting of cocoa, soft round tannins that don't scratch. It's the bottle you open when the nyama choma hits the grill and you want something that can keep up. Smooth, generous, zero fuss. Grab it tonight and we'll have it at your door fast.
First sniff is all dark fruit: juicy plum, black cherry, a little blackberry, with cocoa, vanilla and a curl of tobacco sitting behind it. There's a tiny pepper-and-clove spark that keeps it interesting. On the tongue it's full and velvety, the ripe berry carries through, tannins are soft (that grippy, mouth-drying feel stays gentle here) and it finishes long and warm. Dry, but so fruit-rich it almost tricks you into thinking it's sweet.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Rutini Wines, one of Mendoza's most respected names, with grapes off their high-altitude vineyards around Tupungato in the Uco Valley. We're talking vines planted over 1,000 metres up against the Andes, where cold mountain nights slow the grapes down and keep all that bright fruit and freshness locked in. Long-time winemaker Mariano Di Paola has been steering Rutini for three decades. Trumpeter is their everyday-pleasure range, the bottle that proves you don't need to spend big to drink genuinely well.
