Pour this and the room relaxes. It's plush and dark-berried up front, with a silky texture that glides instead of grips, so it goes down far too easily on a slow Friday or next to a plate of nyama choma. Three grapes, one smooth operator. If you want an Argentine red that punches above its price and doesn't ask you to think too hard, this is your bottle tonight.
First sniff is all dark fruit: ripe raspberry, cherry and a streak of cassis (that's blackcurrant, the deep jammy kind), with a little crack of black pepper and a whisper of toast from the oak. On the palate it's medium to full, properly dry, with rounded berry fruit and a silky, almost velvety feel. The tannins (the bit that dries your gums on a young red) are soft and well-behaved here, so it finishes warm and smooth rather than sharp.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Rutini Wines, one of Argentina's most respected names, born back in 1885 when Felipe Rutini planted vines in Mendoza's Uco Valley before almost anyone else thought it was a good idea. Turns out he was right. The fruit grows high up in Tupungato, between roughly 1,050 and 1,200 metres above sea level, where cool mountain nights keep the grapes fresh and the flavours concentrated. The Trumpeter line is Rutini's everyday-brilliant range, and the Reserve Blend gets around a year in French oak to round it all off.
