Undurraga Cab Sauv 75cl
You want a red that just gets on with it , no homework required. This is that bottle. Undurraga's U Cabernet is soft, juicy and friendly, with ripe red fruit and a little sweet vanilla hum that makes it go down far too easily. Pour it on a Tuesday, pour it for the nyama choma on Friday. It plays both.
Pop it and you get intense ruby in the glass and a nose of red berries with a soft vanilla note sitting behind. On the palate it's smooth and dry (not sweet, just ripe-fruited), with plum and dark cherry, a hint of toast, and gentle tannins that grip your cheeks just enough without drying you out. There's a splash of Syrah blended in, which rounds the edges and gives it that easy, plush feel. Medium-bodied, clean finish, nothing to overthink.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Viña Undurraga, one of Chile's old guard, founded back in 1885 just outside Santiago in the Maipo area. Fun nugget: they were the first Chilean winery to ship wine to the United States, way back in 1903, so they've had a long time to get the everyday reds right. The grapes here are pulled from Chile's Central Valley, the sunny stretch that makes Chilean Cabernet so reliably ripe and easygoing.
